Man murdered victim while on bail for stabbing
South Yorkshire PoliceA man who fatally stabbed another man in the chest during a fight was on bail for another knife attack at the time, a court has heard.
Callum Strachan, 23, was found guilty of the murder of Alan Sutton, 41, in Monk Bretton, Barnsley, at Sheffield Crown Court earlier.
He was also convicted of other charges including wounding and possessing an offensive weapon after seriously injuring another victim in an alleyway assault in Grimsby three months before Sutton's death.
He was under investigation for the Grimsby incident at the time he killed Sutton and will be sentenced on Friday.
According to South Yorkshire Police, officers were called to Burton Road following reports of an altercation involving a group of men on 1 September 2024.
Alan Sutton was found with stab wounds to his chest and died at the scene.
South Yorkshire PolicePrior to Sutton's murder, Strachan had attacked a man in Grimsby in June 2024 during a "jealous feud".
The victim later told officers he only knew of Strachan through his ex-partner and recalled having an argument over the phone.
About 30 minutes later, he said Strachan, armed with a baseball bat, and another man wielding a knife chased him along the road into an alleyway on Sixhills Street.
Strachan first hit the victim with the bat multiple times before taking the knife off the other man and stabbing him four times, causing a punctured lung and a leg injury.
According to Humberside Police, Strachan was detained three days later.
While in custody and during interviews, he offered no comment to all questions asked and was bailed pending further inquiries.
Strachan, of no fixed abode, was eventually found guilty of murder, section 18 wounding with intent, three counts of possessing a bladed article, one count of threatening a person with a bladed article in public and one count of possessing an offensive weapon.
PC Dan Greaves, of Humberside Police, said: "This was a completely unnecessary and brutal attack on a defenceless man, leaving him for dead in the street, all over a jealous feud.
"I would like to commend the victim for coming forward and supporting the investigation; the events of that night have greatly affected him both mentally and physically, and whilst I am pleased Strachan has been found guilty, this verdict will not take away the fact the victim must live with those scars for the rest of his life."
