20mph school speed limit refused despite petition
GoogleA council has ruled out imposing a 20mph speed limit outside a secondary school despite nearly 2,000 signatures calling for it.
Campaigners argued that reducing the limit from 30mph on Huddersfield Road, near Penistone Grammar School, would improve safety for pupils, parents and staff.
Barnsley Council officers said the authority's traffic group had found no collision cluster sites at the location, so a permanent 20mph limit could not be supported.
The council said it would install new "20mph when lights flash" warning signs on the road, designed to slow vehicles down during busier periods.
A total of 1,985 people signed the petition, which was received by the council on 12 December last year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The council, which considered the proposal on Tuesday, said no further action was recommended unless further evidence was brought forward.
