Parking restrictions are set to be introduced in June

Restrictions on how long visitors can park for free on a beachfront are set to be introduced this summer following noise and litter complaints.

From June, visitors to Saltburn's Marine Parade will only be allowed to park in existing marked parking bays on the north side of the road.

Cars will only be permitted to park in the spots for four hours between 9:00 and 17:00 BST from Monday to Saturday, with no returns allowed four hours immediately after. Motorhomes will not be permitted to park in unmarked areas at any time.

The move was first announced in August by Redcar and Cleveland Council following complaints about vehicles – particularly motorhomes – sometimes parking for days on end.

The move was previously called a compromise by local Labour MP Anna Turley following a climb down from earlier plans to ban overnight parking completely, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The council said it had no plans to introduce charges for people to park in the spots.

The local authority said the cost of parking machines to manage these restrictions, as in other free limited waiting areas, would cost about £24,000.

Saltburn Against Promenade Changes campaigner Gemma Booth said the costs came at the time when residents were told the council's budget was stretched.

She also claimed the machines would restrict pavement access to wheelchair users and anyone with a pushchair.

Labour councillor Carl Quartermain said the new measures would be reviewed following the summer season.
