Repair work started on Tuesday, the county council said

A road that attracted complaints from locals and road users due to the amount of potholes it had, has been closed for repairs.

The state of Barnhurst Lane, near Codsall, drew criticism on social media earlier this year.

The work began on Tuesday and is expected to take about 10 days, according to Staffordshire County Council, although some defects were "complex" and crews were assessing the most cost-effective ways of making them safe.

Peter Mason, cabinet member for strategic highways at the council, said: "We do appreciate people's patience and co-operation while the road is closed. Once the repairs are complete and the area made safe, the road will be reopened."

Mason added: "Our crews have already carried out maintenance and a number of repairs on the lane.

"The remaining carriageway safety defects are complex and crews have been investigating the most cost effective ways of making those defect safe.

"They will be on site again over the next couple of weeks to complete the remaining repairs."

Last month, the Asphalt Industry Alliance said it would cost £1.94bn to clear the backlog of road repairs across the West Midlands as it labelled the condition of local roads a "national disgrace".
