Police officers rescued a man aged in his 70s who was driving a mobility scooter after he accidentally turned on to a motorway.

Essex Police was called to the M11 near Harlow after he had been seen driving along the hard shoulder at about 12:35 GMT on Friday.

They briefly closed a single lane while they checked on the man, put him into a car and took him and his scooter home.

"Not a typical stop for our roads policing unit, but a great reminder to only use suitable vehicles on our major roads," a police spokesperson said.

Officers thanked those who reported.
