A trainee anaesthetist who was jailed for stealing drugs from a hospital before injecting them into a woman during sex has been struck off.

Dr Jonathon Dean was jailed for more than two years in 2024 at Cambridge Crown Court after admitting nine counts of theft of drugs and possession of Class A drugs.

The court heard how he had driven from his home in Epping in Essex to Cambridge in 2018, with anaesthetic drugs, after agreeing to "chemically enhanced sex" with a woman.

The Medical Practitioners' Tribunal Service ruled that Dean's actions were "sexually motivated and exploitative" and removed him from the medical register.

It also said that he had abused his professional position and acted dishonestly, and that allowing him to continue working as a doctor could endanger the public.

"The tribunal determined that the level of current and ongoing risk he poses to public protection is so significant that he should not be permitted to practice," documents said.

Dean, who lived in Poplar in east London at the time of his trial, stole the medication from Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone, where he was working as a trainee anaesthetist.

He stole cyclizine, ondansetron, propofol, midazolam and morphine between December 2018 and March 2024, the court was previously told.

It was on 14 December 2018 that Dean drove to Cambridge to meet a woman, with whom he had previously exchanged messages.

They had agreed to the use of the drugs during sex - a high-risk practice also known as chemsex, which is designed to enhance, prolong or facilitate sexual experiences.

'Sedated or anaesthetised'

According to the tribunal service's report, Dean then proceeded to have sex with her in her room while she was "sedated or anaesthetised".

Other than confirming that he had engaged in anal sex with her, he "refused" to tell her exactly what he had done to her, the report ruled.

Concerns were raised at the hospital where he worked within a few days after the woman involved presented herself to another hospital.

Dean also attended either Whipps Cross Hospital or Royal London Hospital on one or more occasions between April 2022 and March 2023, having been instructed not to.

During sentencing, Judge Philip Grey said that Dean's offending was about "wanting chemically enhanced sex and being in a position of dominance and power".

He also said that he believed Dean had stolen the drugs for "sexual kicks" and had been "looking forward to playing God with those drugs".

Aisha Khan, mitigating, said Dean "suffered from addiction", was "ashamed for what has occurred", and had apologised "unreservedly".
