Commuters faced long delays after a lorry carrying pallets caught fire on a motorway.

The M5 southbound in Gloucestershire was shut between Junction 13 (Stroud) and Junction 14 (Thornbury), shortly after 02:00 GMT.

Traffic monitoring site INRIX reported miles of congestion, with queues stretching back to Junction 12 (Quedgeley) and along the A38 diversion route.

A National Highways spokesperson confirmed the fire was extinguished and the vehicle was recovered. The motorway has since reopened.
