Job losses as whisky distillery closes restaurant
Lakes Distillery More than a dozen people have lost their jobs after a whisky company decided to close its restaurant and shop, as well as end tours of its distillery.
Lakes Distillery in Cockermouth, Cumbria, said about 15 jobs were being cut at its Brand Home site, where it housed its bistro.
The company, which was bought by the Nyetimber Group in 2024, said the business had suffered from changes in consumer spending habits and the rising cost of living.
"Financially subsidising this part of the business has been diverting funds away from the core financial objectives and growth plans for The Lakes," a spokesperson said.
"As a result, the difficult decision has been made to close the shop and the bistro and stop offering distillery tours.
"Sadly, this has also resulted in job losses for a number of valued staff."
GoogleThe company said the closures would not impact the distillery and the whisky-making team but it was unclear how the Brand Home site would be used in the future.
"The Nyetimber Group will also be carefully considering how The Lakes site can best support its ambitious, strategic goals, which will be shared at an appropriate time," the spokesperson added.
