Sweeping changes to welfare begin

Government changes to the welfare system have started coming into effect, including benefit cuts for some people with spare bedrooms.

They include a reduction of benefit for social housing tenants of working age with spare bedrooms.

The biggest shake-up of the welfare system for decades will also see low income households in many local authority areas in England begin paying council tax for the first time.
