Thousands of people attend Straw Bear Festival

Thousands of people have turned out for The Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival, near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

The festival is a tradition that dates back to the mid-1800s, but has attracted thousands of spectators since its revival in the 1980s.

On Saturday, festival-goers witnessed the straw bear parade through the town, accompanied by musicians, plough boys and dancers.

Gary Cook, the festival's director, said: "People think of the Fens being a flat, boring place, but I'm sure all the visitors in Whittlesea today, wouldn't agree with you.

"We get crowds of 3,000 to 5,000 attending here."

The festival runs from Friday to Sunday, and ends with the model of the bear being burned at Decoy Lakes.
