Paul Moessl - an insight into "Who Killed Mrs De Ropp?"

Paul Moessl

Record producer Paul Moessl's first TV commission was the BBC Four drama, "Who Killed Mrs De Ropp?" Based on three short stories by Saki, its visual style mixes realism with cut-out/silhouette style animation.

To write music that covered such a diverse stylistic range was quite a challenge for any first time TV composer.

Paul talks through three scenes in detail explaining how and why he made the musical choices he did.

In this early scene the author tells the story of Bertha and the Wolf.

Bertha gets a fright
For the graphic sequence I had no pictures to work from - just the script and a timing sheet.

Nicholas's desire to outwit the aunt is played out in the gooseberry bushes.

The aunt is on the prowl
The intention of the music here was to bring out the playful but also the dark and slightly sinister side of the aunt's character.

Conradin's dream world is evoked mixing graphic and realist elements.

Conradin's flight of fancy
The director wanted a mood that was fairytale, innocent, childlike. But halfway through he wanted the music to switch and become slightly unsettling.
