London's Phil Asher joined Gilles Peterson on his Ibiza show from Cafe Mambo this year. We caught up with him after the show, to find out his Ibiza Essentials...
How did you enjoy Gilles' show tonight?
It was really good. It had a great atmosphere and it was really nice watching the sun go down. Zero 7 were brilliant, it was just nice to come over and play for Radio 1.
What did you play tonight?
I Played Afronaugt 'Work It', 'Space Monkey' by Domu, 'Music' by Marvin Gaye and I played a Numbers track from their new album called 'Bitten Apples'
Did the location determine what you played tonight?
I think so, yeah. I think it's good to give the radio listener something different because Gilles' show is predominantly eclectic, so it's good to mix it around a bit and give them a picture of Ibiza but remember that you're on the radio and not in the middle of a club banging it out. That's the kind of music I always play - I loved it, I felt at home.
Have you played in Ibiza before?
To be honest I've always turned it down because I came to San Antonio about four years ago and I didn't like it, so I've turned it down for about for years - stupidly really!
What's your favourite Ibiza club?
I haven't got one yet. They're all pretty cool, I suppose Manumission is the best night.
What's your favourite Ibiza bar?
The bar that's on Salinas Beach - any bar on Salinas Beach!
What do you wear on Salinas Beach - all bits covered or just shades?
All bits covered. I just enjoy the sun and the nice water.
What's your essential fashion item of the summer?
I'm really unfashionable. My essential fashion item has to be my electric toothbrush!
What's your essential beach listening
Zero 7, Nathan Haines and 4 Hero
Have you ever had a holiday nightmare?
No, I never have a holiday!
What's your favourite Ibiza anthem?
Masters At Work featuring India - 'To Be In Love', it was played at a time when harder music kind of dominated and there weren't so many songs around.
What's your most memorable Ibiza moment?
Seeing Party Marty, one of our mates, walking along the beach tonight, but rather than walking forwards, it was more like side to side!
