Dawid Malan is hoping to deliver both on and off the pitch after signing a two-year deal to play T20 Blast cricket for Gloucestershire.

The former England star, 38, admits he is approaching the tail end of a playing career that has seen him make 114 appearances for his country in red and white ball cricket.

But he believes he has plenty to offer with both the bat and potentially crucial pieces of career advice before he hangs up his pads.

"Experience is something that I've got and hopefully [that will bring] some consistent run-scoring performances," Malan told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

"But it is not only on the field but off the field as well - being able to help some of the younger players and lend some of my knowledge to see if I can help.

"It would be good to add to that knowledge and see whether I can leave something with them before I retire or am pushed on, whichever one comes first.

"I remember being a young player and Owais Shah helped me quite a lot at Middlesex, with small bits and pieces that he gave you. You didn't really think about it too much at the time but obviously you put it into practice.

"But now you look back and think how much that helped you and how quickly it helped you develop. That is the aim for me. If anyone wants to speak to me about batting or my experiences or what they could do better, I am always willing to help."

'Get the most out of their talent'

Malan, who played for Yorkshire for the last five years before parting company with the country last November, said he had no hesitation accepting the invite from Gloucestershire director of cricket Jon Lewis when it came.

"Coming towards the stage [I'm at] in my career, you try to find a club really big in playing white-ball cricket. Gloucestershire have always been that team.

"When I was playing at Middlesex all those years, they were always the team that used to rock up and beat you despite the fact they didn't seem to have as many superstars as other teams.

"They seemed to do the basics really well and get the most out of all the talent they had and that is something I really believe in as a player."

Malan has joined for the 2026 and 2027 Blast campaigns with Gloucestershire hoping to repeat their 2024 domestic T20 title.
