  1. ouch!

    Essex 149 v Somerset 298-6

Wow, the first ball of the over popped up off a length hitting Craig Overton on the thigh and nearly knocking him over, four balls later it rolls along the ground just past off stump.

Even a man 122* is struggling with this invariable bounce, even more dangerous with the new ball.

Essex should be licking their lips, but still cannot eradicate the Somerset skipper from the crease.

Two batting bonus points, only two runs away now, a great effort from Somerset to get this far in conditions so hard to score runs.

  2. Postpublished at 14:05 BST

    Surrey 520 v Leics 57-0

Meat and drink for Australian opener Jake Weatherald as Tom Lawes serves up a half-volley outside off and it gets the treatment.

Lovely stroke by Weatherald as it flies to the extra cover boundary for four.

  3. 50 runs

50 up for Leicestershirepublished at 14:02 BST

    Surrey 520 v Leics 53-0

Not a bad start at all this from Leicestershire.

Rishi Patel picks up his second four of the innings from Jordan Clark and the Foxes pass the 50 mark.

    Revis b Abbott 40 (Yorks 137-5 v Hants 251)

Accurate bowling from Kyle Abbott who arrows one in on off stump and knocks it out of its moorings.

Matthew Revis has batted well for his 40 and was caught between a defensive shot and a leave.

He was kind of hoping that the ball would leave him and he could have played safely inside it but it has nipped back and demolished his pole.

  5. Postpublished at 14:01 BST

    Notts 279 & 34-2 v Glamorgan 113

Joe Clarke tries the cover drive from Timm van der Gugten but doesn't quite get it right. It's a thick edge but it runs away for four and they all count.

The very next ball, the back foot drive is much cleaner from Clarke towards the deep cover boundary and he comes through for another couple.

  6. Postpublished at 13:58 BST

    Surrey 520 v Leics 49-0

Jake Weatherald picks up two fours on the bounce. The first, a lovely stroke, the second, not so much.

He flashes at one outside off-stump from Tom Lawes and it flies between second slip and gully and down to the rope.

  7. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Bristolpublished at 13:57 BST

    Glos 10-1 v Durham 605-5 dec

A huge storm has blown over Bristol and the players are sprinting off the field.

It is also very windy and the groundstaff have one heck of a job trying to get a cover down on the pitch.

This could be a lengthy stoppage.

Relief for Gloucestershire as they trail by the small matter of 595 runs.

  8. new ball

    New ballpublished at 13:57 BST

    Essex 149 v Somerset 280-6

    No hesitation.

    Taken at the first opportunity.

Jamie Porter uses it first to Craig Overton 110*, Will Smeed is 21* off 58 balls.

  9. Postpublished at 13:55 BST

    Yorks 134-4 v Derbys 251

Liam Dawson to kick things off and is a bit loose with Adam Lyth pouncing on a leg side delivery and the ball trundling down to the fine leg boundary for four.

Not the start Hants wanted particularly getting Lyth up and running after the break. He moves to 69 and adds another single to stroll off strike.

  10. Postpublished at 13:55 BST

    Surrey 520 v Leics 41-0

Jordan Clark likes the look of this as he swings it in to Rishi Patel and catches him bang in front.

It's fast from Clark and Patel was stepping across it so a tad tough to see the exact line.

May have been going over the top.

  11. Postpublished at 13:54 BST

    Notts 279 & 28-2 v Glamorgan 113

    Painful one for Joe Clarke.

Timm van der Gugten gets one to pop up off a length and it catches the Notts man on the glove, trapping hand between ball and bat handle.

    Those hurt.

Clarke is fine to carry on though.

  12. Postpublished at 13:52 BST

    Notts 279 & 26-2 v Glamorgan 113

First runs of the afternoon session for Notts as Timm van der Gugten slams one into the thigh pad of Ben Slater as he looks to nudge it into the leg-side and they can come through for an easy single.

  13. Postpublished at 13:49 BST

    Surrey 520 v Leics 35-0

Ooh, this is a bit of a beauty from Tom Lawes. It's fast on a length and cutting across left-hander Jake Weatherald from over the wicket.

Weatherald dangles a bat but luckily for him, doesn't get an edge on it.

    Wicked delivery from Lawes.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 13:49 BST

    Hudson-Prentice c Smith b Bamber 5 (Sussex 130-8 v Warwickshire 267)

Ethan Bamber struck first ball after lunch, having Fynn Hudson-Prentice caught behind, as he and Michael Booth take the bowling after lunch, trying to eradicate their opposite bowlers Jack Carson and Ollie Robinson now from the crease having seen the back of Tom Price just before lunch too.

Sussex continuing to lose wickets quickly, no-one bar their openers has passed 16.

  15. Postpublished at 13:45 BST

    Surrey 520 v Leics 35-0

Second ball after lunch and Jake Weatherald is quick to pounce and swivel on a short one from Jordan Clark to pull it away for four behind square on the leg-side after a no-ball to start the session.

Weatherald then picks up a single into the off-side.

  16. Back under way at Old Traffordpublished at 13:44 BST

    Lancs 351 v Derbys 65-1

Tom Hartley has the ball in hand and Harry Came is on strike as play resumes in Manchester.

  17. Postpublished at 13:44 BST

    Notts 279 & 25-2 v Glamorgan 113

Big appeal first ball as Timm van der Gugten sends it down the leg side and Ben Slater has a flick at it.

Chris Cooke takes it in behind the stumps but it looks like it was a brush on the thigh pad, rather than bat.

Craig Overton's second hundred in first-class cricket

Stand-in skipper Craig Overton continues to lead by example and completes his second first-class century, by far the best innings of his career yet.

The fist is already pumping as he runs through to complete the single.

Coming in under real pressure yesterday afternoon a place higher than usual, with no Lewis Gregory or Tom Kohler-Cadmore batting in this match, he has scored runs just when his side need them most.

He did bat at six for most of the season a few years ago, but has not since seen form like the 60* and 18* he scored in the first round against Notts and this today.

After two hernia operations and getting married last autumn, his partner is pregnant, he celebrated his birthday yesterday, and he is captaining the Championship side, but Overton seems to be thriving on all this new responsibility.

Also now past the 50 partnership between these two big-hitters, which Overton has dominated.

  19. Play resumes at The Ovalpublished at 13:43 BST

    Surrey 520 v Leics 28-0

Away we go again at The Oval. Leicestershire will be hoping to bat long today to eat into the 492-run lead Surrey have.

  20. Play resumes at Trent Bridgepublished at 13:42 BST

    Notts 279 & 25-2 v Glamorgan 113

We're about to get back under way for the second session at Trent Bridge and whisper it quietly, but there is bright sunshine beating down as the players take to the field.
