Newcastle v PSV (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Right, it's about time for us to call time on this page, but you can follow this evening's Champions League action here.

This is a recap of what Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had to say:

    • The Magpies boss has been buoyed by the return to training of Dan Burn and Will Osula, but says Wednesday's game against PSV is "too soon" for them both
    • Howe says he is trying to live by the attacking principles set by former Newcastle managers Sir Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan
    • There is "no truth" in the rumours linking Newcastle with Brazilian teen forward Rayan, says Howe
    • He also said that Sven Botman was one of the best defenders in the Premier League, when playing to his top level
    • And finished by saying that it was up to the team to "create moments" to give strikers Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa the chance to "decide the game" against PSV
  2. 'These things will come'published at 17:01 GMT 20 January

Newcastle v PSV (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has also spoken before his team play PSV.

He said the club is focused on each Champions League game as it comes. He was also given a question about what he has to do to be capped for the Netherlands: "Of course I had a difficult spell with my injuries. I think I had a good moment before that, I was in the squad a few times. I didn't play of course, there is a big name in front of me in that position.

"But I am focusing on the club, focusing on me enjoying football, staying fit, getting the most games as possible. I am a believer that when you are in good shape these things will come."

  3. 'Woltemade and Wissa both have standout qualities'published at 16:57 GMT 20 January

Finally, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on the key to getting more out of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa: "I think there is an individual expectation that they have to max out on the pitch and give their all and I think if they do that, they both have standout qualities that will help us, whichever one we pick.

"All we can ask from them is that they give their absolute all for the team and then of course the team needs to create moments for them to hopefully decide the game."

  4. 'Relatively unknown what direction we will take' - Howe on January windowpublished at 16:56 GMT 20 January

Newcastle v PSV (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on whether the return of key players like Dan Burn and Will Osula will be as close to 'new signings' as the club will get in this window: "I don't know. Certainly they will feel like new signings for us, esepcially Dan because there is a real positional need there. That is no slight on Will because we are delighted to have him but Dan's return with being so light in that position is a huge lift.

"There is still time. It is still relatively unknown in terms of what direction we will take."

  6. 'There is a real stimulation about these games'published at 16:53 GMT 20 January

Newcastle v PSV (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

More from Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on why the team are scoring more goals in the Champions League: "No, I don't know. Sometimes these things happen. We have done well in certain games in the Champions League.

"You can see in the players that there is a real stimulation about these games, a real focus. You can see it in the training, in the preparation and you can just see it in the body language. They want to do well in every competition but there is a special feeling about this for obvious reasons.

"That plays a part. We have some really good attacking players and I think some of the games have suited us with high-intensity games and with the atmosphere here that has really helped us as well.

"I think there are a few conditions that have lined up in our favour and hopefully this will be the same."

  7. Postpublished at 16:51 GMT 20 January

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has stopped talking and has passed the mic - not literally - to defender Sven Botman.

We will hear from the Magpies defender in a moment, but have another few lines to come from Howe first.

  8. Botman 'one of the best in Premier League' when at top formpublished at 16:48 GMT 20 January

Newcastle v PSV (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

More from Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on the development of Sven Botman: "I think Sven when he first came to the club, he was an instant hit for us. It took him seven/eight games to break through but his early form was magnificent. He was part of a back four that conceded very few goals and part of a team that lost very few games.

"He adapted to life in the Premier League very quickly. Unfortunately, we lost him for a period of time due to injury and that has been the hardest part of his time here. We are delighted to have him back now and hopefully he can get back to the form when he was at his very best because when he was at that level I think he was one of the best defenders in the Premier League, without a doubt."

Would love a 4-2-3-1 with Wolter in the #10. But without Osula as a back-up striker it isn't going to happen.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on the importance of Sven Botman signing a new deal this month: "It is really important. I think when we enter negotiations with these players, they have a good feel for the football club, for us, the supporters and that they feel this is the right place to continue to their development and journey.

"I am pleased Sven feels that way. It has been a tough few months for him because he has had difficult injury problems and setbacks and he has had to show real strength of character. He has great qualities and I think we really missed him [when he was injured] so to get him back was a massive lift.

"I think we are seeing signs of him getting back to his best levels and hopefully that can stay the same for many years to come."

  11. Postpublished at 16:45 GMT 20 January

The Vasco da Gama player has a £69m clause in his contract, but the Brazil Serie A side is believed to be willing to drop their demands to £43.5m in the January window.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on the values he likes to preach: "I am very aware of the history with Sir Bobby [Robson]. The values he stood for; hard work, good organisation, always going to the end and never giving up. Trying to do the crowd justice and representing the club in the right way - I think they were all values he stood for.

"He wanted his team to give everything on a matchday and we have been trying to live by these principles since day one when I arrived here.

"Very similar to Kevin Keegan's principles as well, he was maybe more expansive in his way of playing but we are trying to live by those principles and I think that is what the crowd want to see."
