  2. 'Salah is fresher and more dangerous'published at 22:57 GMT 21 January

    FT: Marseille 0-3 Liverpool

Salah slotted in nicely into Liverpool's 4-2-2-2 shape. If you want to get the best out of him, you need continuity and consistency, so I think Slot will use him like this again - it takes away that defensive responsibility, of having to track back as far as when he is out wide.

It leaves him fresher and more dangerous when he is not running as much - tonight it almost felt like he was on the shoulder of his defender all the time, sniffing for chances, and he got two great opportunities where he should have done better.

I actually thought in the Brighton game in December, where Salah came on as sub, Slot played a similar system but he played a diamond in midfield rather than a box. He played Salah up alongside Ekitike in that game too, and it worked really well that time too - he had two or three opportunities playing in that system as well.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, speaking to Uefa: "A good performance, a good win - and on to the next one."

On the importance of finishing in the top eight: "It’s very important as you miss the play-offs, and it helps with the intense programme that we’re having. It’s all down to us again next week, at home. Let’s make sure we’re in the top eight. We've put ourselves in a good position, but that's for next week."

On his 350th appearance for the club: "I’m very proud. These things I don’t take for granted. I keep going, and on to the next one."

Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior: "I was delighted for Moises Caicedo to get the goal and the win we deserved.

"Moi is an outstanding player, a world class midfield player. We are always a threat on set plays. He is a top player.

"When you play against a low block your pivot players play higher up and hopefully he can continue chipping in with goals.

"Of course you want to score more goals but the reality is we are in the top eight.

"We have to keep focusing on the job and that is to win as many games as possible. I can't affect how people judge me but I am very excited for the future of this club.

"I would the fans to be with us and with me but to do that I need to earn that."

Why no Cole Palmer? "Precautionary, he felt something really, really minor against Brentford. I don't want to risk any players at this stage, especially of Cole's quality."

Related to past groin issue? "No."

  5. 'Both full-backs had really good games'published at 22:48 GMT 21 January

    FT: Marseille 0-3 Liverpool

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on MOTD: UEFA Champions League

As well as Salah, this shape suited a few of Liverpool's other players tonight - especially their new signings.

Both full-backs had really good games, going in both directions. In possession, they were very high. They were the ones giving Liverpool the width and being asked to do that side of the game. Obviously they have got to do the defensive side of things as well, and they both did well.

I think Kerkez has improved a lot in recent weeks - he looks more comfortable and seems to understand what is needed in his role. Frimpong too, looks fitter and looks dangerous. He is a little bit different because he can beat people in one-v-one situations, but overall both of them were superb.

Arne Slot applauds fansImage source, Getty Images

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to TNT Sports: "It could have been a tricky place to go and it is because of their fans but also because of their players and manager. We had to be very good today and we were. We should have done better in the counter-attack. We were very positive on the ball. We scored three and everyone will be more positive than when we create five chances but score one.

"In the last 13 games unbeaten, we've only been 54 minutes behind. We had many earlier chances to win it today. Today, we probably deserve what we got. We weren't unlucky like we've been so many times this season.

"I know why we're not consistent and that is mainly to do when a game is open, it is completely different than playing against a low block. You cannot compare that with the game tonight when both teams want to press and play out from the back. If we're inconsistent, it's because we struggle with low blocks.

On potentially avoiding play-offs: "People can see what a squad we have. We have three players out with injuries and we already don't have the size of squad that our competitors have, so it's important we don't play these games."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to TNT Sports: "Really good performance from us. A difficult opponent, tactically they are tough to play against.

"We were rewarded with some really good goals today. Really good night for Yoane Wissa and I am really pleased for him. In part he came to this club for nights like today. The players embraced the challenge and I thought it was the best individual performances from a lot of the players for a while.

"A lot of the players have excelled in this competition this year and Anthony Gordon is one of those."

On Kieran Trippier giving Lewis Miley the captain's armband: "It was unscripted and unplanned, typical Kieran - thinking of other people. A great moment for Lewis."

Can you go to Paris and win in final game? "It is what we have to try to do. One step at a time, it is Aston Villa first. Premier League is so important and a really tough game."

On Bruno Guimarães injury: "For Bruno to come off it is a worrying sign but fingers crossed."

Pullman is a beloved figure at the club and also enjoyed a heart‑warming exchange with Jose Mourinho when his Benfica side visited earlier in the Champions League campaign.

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, speaking to TNT Sports: "Very important three points. We stay close and we win tonight, we're very happy. We score a little bit late but the most important [thing] is the three points."

On Moises Caicedo's goal: "Everyone knows he's incredible. He helps the team without the ball a lot but with the ball as well. Tonight we see he scores a good header, he's not the most tall but he scores and we're very happy. Moises is incredible."

On facing a defensive Pafos side: "Pafos play very well and play a low block and it was very hard tonight but we keep pushing. It was good. We are very happy, we take the three points and we continue to win."

On scoring a rare header: "Tonight was the night so I'm so happy."

On being a leader in the squad: "A lot of people tell me I am a leader. I don't talk too much in the dressing room but I like to show on the pitch and in training."

On playing against a defensive side: "It's so difficult but we controlled the game really well and that was important for us because in every moment we were going to score more goals."

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, speaking to TNT Sports: "It's always difficult to play against De Zerbi's team because if you're not front-footed, then they can play out pretty easily. They keep on playing and taking a risk. We exploited the space well and I think the performance is good.

On Joe Gomez: "I've played with Joe many times and it helps that we are very good friends. Pleased for him and for the whole team. Everyone put a shift in and that's how it should be. It was a very good atmosphere. it's a stadium i've never played before and I was looking forward to it.

On building momentum: "We always keep saying it after a win or a good result. Fully focus on recovery now and then we go to Bournemouth and they're hard to beat. We have to be more than ready. We fly back tomorrow. On to the next.

On rumours he held a meeting after Burnley: "I don't know the ones who put it in the media. There was going to be a meeting but I didn't say it was from me. I don't know where this misinformation came from."
