Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu tells BBC One: "Very frustrating. We probably let them score too easily probably in the first 20 minutes.

"In these conditions, it's hard to come across points. After when the rain did start coming down after 20 minutes, we struggled to find field position and adjust properly to how the game was going. That's on us.

"It's on us, isn't it? We were too loose in the carry. They ultimately adjusted better and that's what they won the game.

"We didn't get the result today. Ultimately, we've still got four more games left in the Six Nations and ones that we need to front up for."

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend tells BBC One: "Hugely disappointed to lose your first game in the tournament, makes things tougher.

"Obviously, the guys are very disappointed. The effort was there. A lot of what we trained was in place. We just gave away too many possessions.

"We just weren't able to score more points in the first half. It was extremely difficult the second half but the effort the players put in was tremendous just not enough to win the game.

"We shouldn't have let them get ahead. They got a couple of breakaway tries. We had opportunities we didn't take and then it made it tough after that.

"Of course there'll be criticism for the result and the performance. I'm with my team. I was hugely proud of the effort they put in at the end, trying to find a way to win. It was really tough and we know we need to be better in that first 20 minutes.

"I believe in them, I believe in what we're doing. Today, it didn't happen and we're going to make sure it happens next week."

This is a really dangerous England side.

The narrative of Scotland going down to Cardiff with two defeats from two is not a nice one.

The thoughts of Gregor Townsend are coming right up...

"There were a lot of good things," he says.

I suspect Scotland fans are mainly thinking about the bad things.

Any hopes of contending in the championship are gone and you wonder whether Gregor Townsend should be gone too.

You’re not going to get rid of him during the tournament but really, beyond this Six Nations, is there any point in persisting?

It’s this constant groundhog day with Scotland and maybe it’s time for somebody else to have a go at running it.

  8. 'This is us'published at 16:19 GMT 7 February

    FT: Italy 18-15 Scotland

Italy captain Michele Lamaro tells BBC One: "Absolutely incredible, I think that shows how much we care for each other, how much we care for this jersey, for this country. This is us. We are to do these sort of games.

That last phase, I couldn't watch. Well done to the boys, fully deserved.

"I couldn't ask more [on my 50th cap] from the boys. It's been an absolute pleasure for me, an absolute honour to get this big achievement.

"We couldn't ask our team-mates to do more.

"Now we've got a dream in our head. We keep going on."

The damage was done early on - those two tries.

Two opportunities, two tries quick and the the set piece took hold. Italy controlled most of that game, had to defend really bravely in the first half.

At the end with the 29 phases, credit to Italy, they deserved their win.

    Absolutely, Dan, Italy were superb.

But I think it's more than fair to also point out Scotland's shortcomings - and there were plenty of them.

Wonder what Townsend's excuse is this time? Fully fit squad to choose from, picked on form, 'best squad he's ever had', lose again. Time is surely up.

    Bob

Absolutely rubbish - clueless, listless and lacking energy. Even at the end we get held up. From the outside seems to be no leadership or spirit and that must come from the atmosphere created by the coach and management. We seem to be getting worse each game and I really fear next week at home.

    Grazer

Surely, this is it for Gregor? I questioned Scotland tactics from the start of this game. No more! Get Franco Smith on the phone now.

    Stuart

Enough is enough, Townsend has had more than his fair time. The players we have are better than the results, he cannot and has not taken us any further. Should never have had a contract extension.

    David

Why is nobody mentioning the Incredible ascendency of the Italian side… Scotland are a good team, but they got beaten by a growing Italy side. This is great for the six nations!

Italy were the better team on reflection for the 80 minutes but you just got a glimpse of what Scotland stood for in the last two minutes of the game.

If they had played like that for 80 minutes, it wouldn't have been a contest.

    They'll feel very despondent tonight.

Italy were brilliant in terms of how they managed conditions in the second half - kicking and set-piece.

Cameras inevitably turn to Gregor Townsend, whose future as Scotland head coach will come under more intense scrutiny.

His team were beaten up in the forwards and fell miles short of the necessary levels at both scrum and lineout.
