Team GB's Bruce Mouat, speaking to BBC Sport after beating defending Olympic champions Italy 9-6: "That is what we need to do [silencing the Italian support]. We can feed off the energy that is in the room as well.

"There were quite a lot of Great Britain flags out there, which is nice to see, and even people we don't recognise and curling has the appeal for Great Britain."

Japan actually outscored USA on five of the eight routines. In the pairs and women's events they were the better team.

But they don't have a world class ice dance pairing, while the Americans have Madison Chock and Evan Bates - who, barring an upset, will win gold on Wednesday in that event too.

Across the two ice dance disciplines, USA outscored Japan by 11 points. That was the difference.

Shun Sato could have done no more. Japan's team could have done no more.

But you cannot deny the Quad God. There is an absolute bundle on the American bench, joy unconfined.

The USA retain their Olympic title.

It's a season's best 194.86 for Shun Sato - but it's not quite enough and the USA win gold!

Ilia Malinin's brilliance takes them to victory. They retain their title after a fabulous night of skating.

Sato looks devastated but he skated brilliantly. He and Japan will have to settle for silver and it's bronze for Italy.

You can't touch Ilia Malinin technically, it is not there, but this is a very classy, very well constructed programme of performances.

There was a couple of beautiful quads in there. Goodness me, this has been a great night of skating.

I don't think it will be enough, but it will be close.

A fabulous effort from Shun Sato - but will it be enough?

He's slightly behind Ilia Malinin on the technical score but he's given himself and Japan a chance.

    Stunning routine.

Shun Sato has a season best of 194.02. He needs to better that by a smudge over six points to beat Ilia Malinin and secure gold for Japan.

    Game on.

No big reaction from Ilia Malinin but it's a big score - 200.03 to be precise.

Yes he might have stumbled, yes he didn't land the quad. But my word, Ilia Malinin is something else.

Some of the elements there - including a standing backflip - almost defied gravity. And he did it all while playing up to the crowd, feeding off the excitement.

If you want an indicator as to how good that was, 1980 Olympic champion Robin Cousins, just to my left, gave that a standing ovation.
