So, here's how the top five is shaping up after the rhythm dance:

    2. Madison Chock & Evan Bates (USA) - 89.72
    3. Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier (Canada) - 86.18
    4. Lilah Fear & Lewis Gibson (GB) - 85.47
    5. Charlene Guignard & Marco Fabbri (Italy) - 84.28

    Well well well.

We did not expect Evan Bates and Madison Chock not to be top of the leaderboard, and neither did the crowd.

    Advantage Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron.

So good, always good. They just bring it time after time.

That routine was at risk of leaving me a little cold - I prefer the pop numbers - but it was a slick performance and the final lift, featuring pirouette after pirouette, was brilliant.

USA's Madison Chock and Evan Bates get 89.72 points but it's not enough to topple the French pair of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron (90.18), who will take a slender lead into Wednesday's free dance.

Charlene Guignard and home favourite Marco Fabbri score 84.28 - that's enough for fourth place with one couple to come but it's not a popular result with the crowd.

The final couple are USA's Madison Chock and Evan Bates - the three-time defending world champions and the most decorated pair in American ice dance history.

    Expectations are HIGH.

That was the biggest reaction of the night from the crowd. No surprise, given Marco Fabbri is Milan born and bred.

I do love that every team has stepped it up this event and the Italians certainly have.

Someone who shall remain nameless was dancing along in the office and that routine packed a punch.

High energy, a crowd-pleasing lift with Charlene Guignard stood on Marco Fabbri's thighs, and then he flips her over his shoulder to finish.

That might be my favourite routine of the night!

A downbeat reaction from Lilah and Lewis. They know that wasn't perfect.

They will need to be better than ever on Wednesday.

A muted reaction from Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson as they're awarded a score of 83.53 for third place.

Italy's Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri - the penultimate pair - are dancing to a Backstreet Boys medley. I can't wait.

Fear lost her balance slightly on the sequential twizzles. But they brought it back big time in the rhythm sequence and concluding rotational lift.

That was a strong performance, and they should be in and around the podium places.

Well, even if they don't get a medal on Wednesday, Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson are the early leaders for most rhinestones.

It's high energy, oodles of fun, and the last lift - with Fear wrapping her legs around Gibson's neck and holding on for all she's worth as he spins - wow.

"They're so in sync," gasps Grace in the office.

Fear and Gibson produced a rhythm dance season best at the European Championship. They then beat that score here in the team event.

If they put in another best showing here, they are right in the medal hunt.
