Walters struck 16 fours and a six in his unbeaten 111

Acting Surrey captain Stewart Walters hit his maiden first-class hundred on a rain-affected third day between Surrey and Essex at Guildford.

In the 27 overs of play that were possible, Walters (111 not out) moved from his overnight score of 86 to bring up his century in 187 balls.

He shared 222 for the fourth wicket with Usman Afzaal, who was eventually dismissed by David Masters for 116.

After beginning the day on 219-3, Surrey closed on 288-4, 113 behind.
