Sad end for European challenge
Padraig Harrington and Tiger Woods at Southern Hills
Harrington (right) lines up a put as Woods looks on
The final round of the US Open in Southern Hills, Tulsa, was a miserable one for the Europeans.

Sergio Garcia, who entered the final round just a shot off the lead, could not have endured any more misery.

Two bogeys in the first five holes and a double bogey at the ninth effectively ruled him out of contention.

Three more bogeys during the final four holes put him back to three-over par and into a tie for 12th place.

Padraig Harrington, who paired Tiger Woods, started off impressively and had got his score down to two-over by the sixth hole.

But a run of four consecutive bogeys starting at the ninth ruined the Dubliner's card.

He eventually finished at eight-over for the tournament, after a round of 74.

Ulster's Darren Clarke, whose tournament was effectively ruined on Friday after an eight at the par five 13th, managed the best finish of the British visitors.

Parnevik

His final round 72 took him to eight-over for the championship.

Also at eight-over was Jesper Parnevik, whose final round of 68 included four birdies.

Nick Faldo could only manage a 75 as he finished the championship on 15-over par, while Gary Orr was a shot further back after a 76.

Colin Montgomerie, starting the day 13 shots adrift, carded a 74 for a 12-over total.

Germany's Bernhard Langer ended the tournament in disappointing fashion with a 74 for an aggregate score of nine-over par.

The former Masters champion had briefly shared the lead on the first day.

And spare a thought for Mathias Gronberg of Sweden, whose final round of 79 included eight bogeys and a double bogey.
