How to say 'to the' and 'at the' using au, à la, à l' and aux

To say 'to the' or 'at the' in French, use: à + the correct article le/la/l’/les

- Use au before a masculine word (eg le supermarché):

je vais au supermarché - I'm going to the supermarket

- Use à la before a feminine word (eg la maison):

elle est restée à la maison - she stayed at home

- Use à l' before a singular word beginning with a vowel or silent -h, eg:

tu as parlé à l'ami de Julien ? - did you speak to Julien's friend?

mon père travaille à l’Hôtel Bleu - my dad works at the Blue Hotel

- Use aux before a word in the plural form, eg:

vous allez aux États-Unis ? - are you going to the USA?
