Using à with locations

À + a town or city

À is also used to mean ‘in’ or ‘to’ when talking about a place:

je vais à Paris - I’m going to Paris

il habite à Poitiers - he lives in Poitiers

on va aller à Londres l'été prochain - we’re going to London next summer

À + a country

À is also used to mean ‘in’ or ‘to’ when talking about masculine or plural countries. For example:

le Japon/le Pays de Gallesà + le = au

ils sont allés au Japon l’année dernière - they went to Japan last year

les Pays-Bas/les États-Unisà + les = aux

je vais aux Pays-Bas - I’m going to Holland

elle a fait un stage aux États-Unis – she did an internship in the USA
