The Nottinghamshire coalfields

In 1963 the East Midlands' coalfields were enjoying boom times. The area had some of the most prosperous coalfields in Europe. The slogan "East Midlands mines have a powerful future" was to be seen in coalfield areas. The mining communities were close-knit, and Ray recalls the "terraced streets so close together - such a powerful community". He even remembers their tin baths!
