ในบทเรียนนี้ เราจะมาฝึกการพูดถึงเมืองที่อยู่กันค่ะ เริ่มด้วยการฟังบทสนทนา แล้วพยายามจับใจความให้ได้นะคะ ว่าเขาอาศัยอยู่ที่ประเทศไหนและเมืองไหน แต่ถ้าไม่เข้าใจทั้งหมดก็ไม่ต้องกังวลนะคะ เดี๋ยวเราจะมาช่วยอธิบายให้ค่ะ

X: Where do you live?

Y: I live in a town called Cambridge. It’s in England. How about you?

X: I live in Glasgow. It’s a city in the West of Scotland.

ฟังเข้าใจไหมคะ? Y มาจากเมือง Cambridge, England.

Insert
I live in a town called Cambridge. It’s in England.

Clare
X  มาจากเมือง Glasgow ใน Scotland.

Insert
I live in Glasgow. It’s a city in the West of Scotland.

OK so let’s take a look at the language used when asking and answering the question ‘Where do you live?’

Clare
คำว่า ‘where’ แปลว่า ‘ที่ไหน’ เป็นคำที่เราใช้ถามถึงสถานที่นะคะ ส่วน ‘live’ คือการอยู่อาศัย ซึ่งประธานในประโยคนี้คือ ‘you’ และเราใช้คำกริยาช่วย ‘do’ เพื่อตั้งคำถามค่ะ

That’s right. When both speakers answer, they begin with ‘I live in…’, then they provide  more detail about the place.

Clare
ใช่ค่ะ และเมื่อพูดถึงชื่อสถานที่ ไม่ต้องเติม ‘a’ นะคะ

Insert
I live in Glasgow.

Clare
จะบอกว่าอาศัยอยู่ในเมือง ‘a town’ หมู่บ้าน ‘a village’ หรือจะใช้ ‘a city’ เพื่อพูดถึงเมืองก็ได้นะคะ

Insert
I live in a town.
I live in Glasgow. It’s a city.

Clare
ฟังคนแรกพูดอีกครั้ง แล้วสังเกตการเน้นคำในประโยคกันค่ะ

I live in a town called Cambridge.

In this sentence, the word town and the name of the place, Cambridge, are stressed.  Listen again.

Insert
I live in a town called Cambridge.

Tom
The first half of the sentence is unstressed and sounds like this – 'I live in a'.  Listen again, then repeat.

I live in a town called Cambridge.

ส่วนเวลาจะอธิบายถึงทิศทาง เราใช้ ‘in the’ ตามด้วย North, East, South หรือ West นะคะ

Insert
It’s in the West of Scotland.

และสังเกตว่า เราใช้ ‘of’ กับชื่อสถานที่ด้วย โดยเฉพาะประเทศค่ะ

Tom
Listen again, which words are stressed in the sentence?

Insert
It’s in the West of Scotland.

Tom
The stressed words are ‘it’s, West and Scotland.

First, ‘of’, becomes ‘of' Let’s repeat.

Next, ‘in the’ becomes ‘in the’. Let’s repeat.

Once again, the whole sentence!

ให้ตอบเป็นชื่อเมืองที่อยู่ค่ะ อธิบายด้วยว่าเป็นหมู่บ้าน ‘village’ หรือเมือง ‘town’ or ‘city’.
