This is not smoke or a swarm of insects, but actually thousands of starlings flying through the air together.

这并不是烟雾，也不是成群的昆虫，而是数千只椋鸟正结伴在空中盘旋飞舞。

These images were captured using a technique from the 19th Century called chronophotography, which captures movement.

这些画面借助了一种源自 19 世纪的拍摄技术捕捉而成，这种被称为 “连续摄影法” 的拍摄技术能够捕捉物体的运动瞬间。

Wildlife photographer Dr Kathryn Cooper, who captured the mesmerising view, says a murmuration like this could be the result of the UK's mild winter.

"They come to us because we have quite mild winters here, and they can number from only a few hundred birds to up to a million birds at once. We're not totally sure exactly why they gather, but it could have something to do with them wanting to be warm, perhaps exchanging knowledge because they're ever so social, you can hear them chattering together. And it's definitely something to do with a bit of strength in numbers."
