如何礼貌地用英语表达不同意见？

大家好，欢迎收听 BBC 英语教学的 “你问我答” 节目。This is Question and Answer of the Week, where we answer your questions about English language, culture and life. I'm Buli, and I'm with Becca, who is here to help me answer this week's question.

Becca
Hi Buli. How are you doing today?

Buli
I'm alright thanks, Becca. How about yourself?

Becca
I'm OK. Although, I am a bit nervous about the meeting later where we share our ideas.

Buli
Oh, that meeting! Well, what ideas do you have so far?

Becca
Just one, actually, and it's about recording this programme in the park.

Buli
Hmm, maybe it's not a good idea to discuss at this meeting. We can talk about it later. But first, let's hear the question for this programme.

Question
在跟别人针对某事进行讨论的时候，有时候我会想说 “我觉得这个想法可能不太好”。请问在英语里我可以怎么礼貌地表达这个意思呢？

Buli
Hey Becca, how about we answer this whole question in Chinese? What do you think?

Becca
Well, I think we should take that idea off the table. How will our listeners improve their English if we speak only in Chinese?

Buli
Ah, I suppose you're right.

Becca
But, if we want to make this programme more fun, I really think we should go to the park.

Buli
Hmm, maybe we should circle back to this another time. I don't want to completely rule it out, but there could be some complications with recording in the park.

Becca
I see. Let's set it aside for now and pick up on it another time.

Buli
That's probably for the best.

There are definitely times when we want to politely decline an idea. So, let's talk about the expressions that we've just used in the conversation.

Becca
Sounds good! The first phrase we heard is 'off the table'. If we keep or leave something off the table, it means to dismiss it. We don't want to consider the idea at all.

Buli
也就是说，我们可以用 “let's keep something off the table” 或者 “let's leave something off the table” 来表达 “咱们先别考虑这件事” 或者 “咱们先不讨论这件事”。其中，短语 “off the table” 的意思就是对某事 “不予考虑”。

And Becca, you also stressed 'I' in that sentence, in relation to yourself, didn't you?

Becca
Yes. On top of the natural stress pattern that we use in English, which is to stress content words such as verbs, adjectives and nouns, we can choose to use stress in other ways to draw attention to meaning in the sentences. I said, 'I think we should take that idea off the table', and what I'm doing there is politely speaking for myself.

Particularly, if you're in a meeting with lots of people, it might be a good idea to speak only for yourself and not on behalf of others.

Buli
I agree with you there, Becca. 在英语中，当我们向他人的某些意见或想法表示反对时，往往需要通过重读句子中的一些单词，从而礼貌地表达自己的观点。比如，通过重读 “I think we should take the idea off the table” 中的代词 “ I（我）”，我们就可以强调 “这只是我的意见，不代表其他人”。

Becca, what about the other two phrases we used – 'circle back to' and 'pick up on'?

Becca
These also have similar meanings. They feel perhaps a little more polite because they're not completely dismissing the ideas. They're expressing that these ideas will be discussed at a different time.

Buli
Like when I responded to your idea of recording in the park. I said that we should perhaps circle back to this another time because there could be some complications with that.

Becca
Yes. Also, your use of 'perhaps' is rather polite there, Buli. Adverbs and modal verbs that make a request, offer or suggestion, such as 'maybe' and 'possibly', and 'should', 'could' and 'may', can be used to politely decline an idea.

Buli
This is also useful when we make our own requests instead of declining an idea.

短语 “circle back to” 和 “pick up on” 的含义分别是 “重新考虑，重新讨论” 和 “重提，再次提及”。我们可以用这两个短语来更加委婉地拒绝一个想法。

不过，Becca，这个句子突然让我想到，刚才我们提到了说话时的重读，但其实在向他人提出不同意见的时候，说话的语气和声调也很重要，对不对？

Becca
Yes. If I use a harsh tone and intonate with a higher pitch at the end of the sentence, it could seem like I feel that I'm superior to who I'm speaking to. Listen to the tone and stress in these two sentences:

Maybe it's not the right time to discuss this.

Maybe it's not the right time to discuss this.

Buli
The first did sound quite rude, and the second, a little more polite. 我们还可以注意到，第一句中的否定词 “not” 也被重读了。这是为了着重强调出说话者实在不想讨论这件事。

Becca
Correct. Also, if I want to say something like 'it's not relevant for our discussion today', and I want to say it more politely, I'd say 'it's not relevant for our discussion today'.

Buli
也就是说，重读句子中的否定词 “not” 会加重反对的语气，而重读 “today” 等表示时间的单词则可以暗示 “也许我们可以换一个时间再谈谈这个话题”。

Now, about recording in the park. To be honest, I don't think it's a good idea to record our programmes there, but we could have our meeting there later.

Becca
