The most talked about roles in the music industry are often those of the performers, but there are still plenty of other ways you can pursue your passion for music.

Performers
It may seem the most glamorous job in the music industry but the road to success can be extremely long for performers, whether in classical or pop music. There's plenty of competition, but for those who stick with it and make it, the rewards can be great.

Musicians
Just about every good singer needs some instrumental back up so good musicians are always in demand. Then there are the classical musicians who perform with various orchestras and bands around the country. You will need to have the ability to read a score and be able to adapt quickly to new music requirements.

Music Producer
A music producer takes on all the tasks required to get a record made. This involves organising studios, booking additional musicians if required, deciding the type of recording process that should be used and keeping it in budget. A producer of classical music will need an extensive knowledge of music and the ability to read a score, but for a producer in pop music a musical knowledge is helpful but not essential.

Radio Presenter
One of the best places you can share your passion for music is on the airwaves. Radio Presenters are the link between the audience and the music, so although your love of music will be important, so will your ability to share and communicate that with the listeners.

Scheduling programmes, deciding on guests and getting involved in selecting the music are all tasks undertaken by a radio producer. You'll need a passion for the type of music and programme you are working on and good communication skills as you'll be the one directing the presenter on air.

Music Video Director
Once the music has been created the next big step is getting it noticed. This is where the music video comes in. It is up to the director to come up with ideas on how to best showcase the music so a strong knowledge of both music and filming is essential.

Interviewing artists, researching new albums, writing live concert reviews and writing features are all part of the job for a music journalist. Composer
As well as composing scores for orchestras there is also a role for music composers on film and television. A composer needs to have a wide understanding of the different musical instruments and how to write for each of them. They will also have to have a good eye for emphasising moving images with music. Music DJ
Playing and mixing a variety of music, usually to a live audience, is the main role of a disc jockey. The basic DJ set up consists of turntables with pitch control, a mixer with a cross fader, a pair of headphones, an amplifier and some speakers.

A lot of songwriters perform their own songs as they feel they are best able to convey the feelings they want to get across, but many of the biggest hits have been written by someone other than the performer. The benefit of songwriting without performing is that you can write songs for any genre that interests you.
