 Musical Theatre Workshop
Here our three experts; Mary Hammond, Shaun Kerrison and Stephen Brooker, give some quick tips for those wanting to get involved in the musical theatre business.
You can also watch the workshop clips to get an insight into what the performers worked on. What makes a performer stand out? Being able to be completely in the moment - completely absorbed in what they are doing. It doesn't have to be the best actor or best singer but somehow those things come together and it makes you want to listen. Know your song What separates the good singers from the great performers is soul, heart and understanding of the material, because that's how they are going to share a story. If they share a story we care for them and if we care for them we love them, and they are stars. Otherwise they're just singers. Training I think in some cases it is extremely beneficial to have a driven education in music and performing skills, but some of the great musical theatre writers were not schooled musicians - they didn't even read music. It's not just singing and it's not just performing... Musical theatre is about that combination of music and language, and putting the two together can be difficult... They come from different parts of the brain so the co-ordination can be tough. Final advice... Know your craft... Know why you're doing it. Unless you have a passion for it, even with skill, there will be something missing when you step out there to sing. You need to be filled with the desire to do it.
