Literally cannot be any question that this will make him Sir Rory! What a pleasure for our wee country and the entire island of Ireland!

    Mark from Belfast

Amazing result for Rory. As someone from Northern Ireland I feel very proud of all he’s achieved. A great event that is held at a well constructed and magical golf course. Justin Rose’s turn next year!

    Seanaid from Northern Ireland

Very well played Rory, he’s answered a lot of doubters with this one, utter class. Special shout to Justin, feel for him coming up just a little short, I hope he’ll get a Green Jacket one day.

Rory McIlroy described Harry Diamond as the big brother he never had. Looks up to him tremendously.

He’s a very good golfer – they played junior golf together and I think that always is a big plus as you’ve got a player on your bag that can see what Rory can see as well.

They have such a great rapport, and I don’t underestimate a caddy being a friend when you are going through really pressurised moments, how much that means and I think it’s a wonderful moment for him.

  7. 'Best European golfer of all time'published at 01:02 BST 13 April

Europe's Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald posting on X: "Tying Seve with 2 green jackets will mean a lot to Rory. He is undoubtedly the best European golfer of all time now."

Three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson on X: "Congrats to Rory McIlroy for an exciting Masters win. Back to back is simply remarkable."

Rory McIlroy speaking in the Champions press conference: "I thought it was so difficult to win last year because of trying to win the Masters and the Grand Slam. This year I realised it’s just really difficult to win the Masters. I tried to convince myself it was both. Incredible.

"I did the bulk of my work on Thursday and Friday. I don't think I would have believed anyone if they had said, 'all you have to do is shoot even par for the weekend and you will win.'

"I just had to hang in there. I did a decent range session last night to try and figure a couple of things out and I definitely hit my irons better today. I think I struck the ball better today overall but I still needed to rely on my short game those last few holes, the up and down on 16 and the up and down on 17 were huge.

"Absolutely delighted to get it done. Having a six-shot lead going into the weekend, it would have been a bitter pill to swallow if I had not been able to get myself over the finish line.

"Good things come to those who wait. Just keep going. I found myself in a very similar position today to where I was last year, two or three behind but I played solid golf after that. I was four under for an 11-hole stretch, which is what I needed to do to give myself that cushion going up the last. If you put the hours in and work on the right things eventually it will come good for you."

McIlroy, to me, is the complete antithesis of Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler is a family man. How long he has the hunger to keep playing, I don’t know.

But with McIlroy, he said at the beginning of the week ‘I’ve got at least 10 more of these in me’ – well that takes him to 46, to Jack (Nicklaus’) age when Jack last won his Masters.

He’s as fit as a fiddle. To me he knows the game more than anyone I’ve seen in a very long time.

I don’t see him giving up.

Rory McIlroy joins an illustrious list of players to win the Masters in successive years.

    • Jack Nicklaus: 1965 and 1966.
    • Nick Faldo: 1989 and 1990.
    • Tiger Woods: 2001 and 2002.

McIlroy holds nerve to win second successive Masters

You had a feeling last year when Rory McIlroy finally got his Green Jacket that it could be just the start - and now he's gone back-to-back that could certainly be the case.

Augusta National is a special place and takes some getting used to, but McIlroy has had the game to win here since his very first visit in 2009.

The reasons he always came up short had nothing to do with his golfing ability, and now freed from those demons that lurked around Amen Corner it'd be a big surprise if he ended up with only two Masters titles.

  14. McIlroy's Masters statspublished at 00:42 BST 13 April

So where did Rory McIlroy win it? Well, looking at the stats it was the scoring clubs, as is the case so often in the majors.

Driving there wasn't much between the leading contenders, and even though Augusta National is a second shot golf course, McIlroy was behind the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Justin Rose who ranked much higher than the eventual champion in approach play.

But McIlroy separated himself in terms of putting, which was Rose's main downfall, and also around the greens where he ranked second in the entire field.

  15. 'That agony is why he is winning tournaments now'published at 00:42 BST 13 April

    Andrew Magee
PGA Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

I thought that was it for McIlroy (when he double bogeyed the par-three fourth). I thought ‘how is he going to recover from this?'

Looking back at Rory’s career, looking back at two wins in a row, the agony he went through is why he’s winning tournaments now.

If he didn’t go through those terrible defeats, losing these Masters time and time again in terrible ways, he wouldn’t have won these two tournaments these last two years.

  16. McIlroy in green againpublished at 00:41 BST 13 April

With no current champion to place the Green Jacket on him, seeing he is the champion, as is customary, Rory McIlroy gets his latest piece of Masters tailoring from Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley.

"It still fits," says McIlroy. "I wanted to come back and prove it was no fluke."

  17. 'I see Rory stacking up these majors'published at 00:39 BST 13 April

    Andrew Magee

Fred Couples said it right a few days ago – McIlroy is going to win a lot of these.

Who’s going to beat him? Scottie Scheffler? I don’t know. Scheffler is not going to play forever – he’s more of a home guy, but I see Rory playing for a long time and stacking up these majors.

  18. 'A whole new level for McIlroy'published at 00:38 BST 13 April

    McIlroy wins the Masters

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think we’re at a whole new level for McIlroy the golfer. He said at the start of the week ‘I felt nervous in the first tee for the first of 16 of the biggest rounds of my year, i.e. the four majors.

We know where his ambitions lie, and he’s knocked off the first one, and he wants to climb the ladders of history – we know that.

So in McIlroy, we’ve got somebody who is into the phase of his career where he’s got the career Grand Slam, all that conversation has gone.

He’s got his second green jacket and it’s not about freewheeling. It’s about playing with freedom with those achievements in the background, to be ‘I’m the man to beat’

More from Rory McIlroy, speaking in Butler Cabin: "I think the tee shot on 12 and the tee shot on 13 to give me the option to go for the green in two [were key]. I struggled with that shot all week. I was up in the pine straw one too many times and I made a really good swing off the 13th tee and that enabled me to go for the green in two and to make a birdie there following the birdie on 12 was massive."

On having his family here: "Incredible. It's the second major win my mum has been at. She was at the Open in Hoylake in 2014. There was a piece of them that didn't want to come this year because they thought okay we didn't come last year and that was maybe the reason but I'm so glad they got to experience this today. We are all going to have a great time tonight."

On watching the leaderboard: "I did, I felt like I needed to especially after the rough start. I was keeping an eye all day and thankfully there were a few guys that made a run but nothing like what Justin did last year. There was some good play from me and fortunate the guys didn't come at me this year."

On his message to his supporters back home: "Thank you for the support. I was a little kid with a dream and the support I had from my family and friends and everyone back home...Some people probably thought it was outlandish to dream of the things I wanted to do but I had amazing support from back home and I can't thank them all enough."
