Legal Services Bill
AIM
The Bill is intended to create independent regulators for the legal profession and greater competition in the legal services market.
MAIN PROVISIONS
Set out the objectives of the regulatory framework and principles of the legal profession, and oblige all designated bodies to separate their representative and regulatory functions
Create a new Legal Services Board (LSB) to provide independent oversight of designated legal regulatory bodies
While day-to-day regulation will remain with the professions, the LSB will have powers to oversee the frontline regulators
Create an Office for Legal Complaints
Enable new kinds of business structures for the legal profession, to allow different types of lawyers (ie solicitors and barristers) and non-lawyers to work on an equal footing
