And then the other team...

A whale has stranded on a beach in Newquay.

Roll it back upright!

The tide is going out, which could hinder its rescue. And there's another issue.

This whale is deflating.

Dan Jarvis, British Divers Marine Life Rescue
"You wouldn't normally do this in the real world."

Problem solved.

But how to help a live whale in an emergency isn't so easy, which is why British Divers Marine Life Rescue is training up a wave of new recruits.

Whale rescues can be high risk.

Here, the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) has a close shave with a humpback as they free it from fishing gear.

Entanglements are increasing and man-made hazards like this can lead to injury and, in turn, strandings. But other factors like disease and population bounce back also play a part.

These volunteers will remain safely on shore and only work alongside the experts.

Dan Jarvis, British Divers Marine Life Rescue
"So our whale pontoon system comes in three parts. There's this heavy duty mat here."

It's a lot to get to grips with. Not just the equipment, it can be emotionally challenging too.

The minke whale that swam up the Thames in 2021 triggered a rescue operation using the same techniques and watched by the nation.

But sadly, despite best efforts, it didn't survive.

Once the volunteers have learnt how to help whales, it's on to dolphins and then injured seals battered by winter storms.

For the untrained, trying to help out isn't advised.

Dan Jarvis, British Divers Marine Life Rescue
"When members of the public find a stranded dolphin, for instance, and they might roll it over and over and down to the water and that can actually break its fins. Similar is just dragging an animal by its tail down the beach. This again can cause quite a lot of damage and distress to the animal."

The BDMLR says although its volunteer cover is up by a third with people paying to train, along some parts of the coastline more support is needed.

Dan Jarvis, British Divers Marine Life Rescue

"So we're going to form a line. The whale's going to swim out now."

If it's to give every whale that beaches alive the best chance of survival.
