Advice

Producing stand out presenters

Kuljinder Singh

Kuljinder Singh - Part two

As the Senior Weekend Producer on the Asian Network, Kuljinder Singh has been responsible for putting together a whole new weekend line-up for the station.

His regular work with new and inexperienced presenters made him the perfect man to give some hints on putting a demo tape together and some advice on getting into the industry.

Q5. Which presenters do you think give a good example of 'how it should be done'?

Adil Ray… has a very funny nature. You're not quite sure where he'll go and you switch on thinking there may be some 'car crash radio' going on, but it's always kept professional and I think it makes great listening.

Q6. Do you think presenters need to have formal training?

Technically, yes there has got to be some training… but in the training there's also got to be an element of how to get your voice across… The job of the producer and team around you is to help you find that voice and get that voice across to the listeners.

Q7. What are your pet hates when it comes to radio presenters?

It is a pet hate of mine when certain phrases are used too often… stuff like 'basically' and 'of course' are just so overused… and you just cringe each time you hear them.

Q8. How can people who want to get into the industry get experience as a radio presenter?

No matter what show it is - get on air. It's always worth looking out for what's going on around your area and on your local radio… The only way of really learning about radio is getting on air.
