 Producing stand out presenters Kuljinder Singh As the Senior Weekend Producer on the BBC Asian Network, Kuljinder Singh has been responsible for a whole new weekend line-up for the station, so that made him the perfect man to give some advice.
Here Kuljinder gives some tips on putting a demo tape together and what the station is looking for in a presenter. In part two he talks about getting into the industry. Q1. What makes a new presenter stand out to you? For me, to stand out you really need to have personality - that's the key thing... I don't want to produce background radio; I want to get people talking. Q2. What are your tips on getting together a demo tape? What I want to hear is a voice that sounds warm and pleasing to the ear, then after that the key thing would be the personality... As long as we have your voice with some sort of clarity that's all we need. Q3. How important is the choice of track on a demo tape? Do presenters actually get a say in the music they play? The choice of track isn't necessarily that important but it is an indication of your music interests. We do have a playlist - a list of songs we play on a daily basis, so most presenters won't have a whole lot of say on what gets played, but we do have some sort of presenter choice on most shows. Q4. Does a radio presenter have to have 'the gift of the gab'? The gift of the gab is a trait well worth having... but it's not necessary. Believe it or not, it is something that can be taught.
