Theme of identity
BRYAN - How important is the theme of identity in the novel?
ELY - I think it’s massively important because although Kirsty’s a fly on the wall narrator and she’s telling you what she thinks is like, what problems her different friends are going through, what she thinks their problems are cause she’s not always right. It’s her way of trying to figure out who she is and she’ll be like watching what Charlene’s doing, “Oh, I don’t really want to… Like she’s out smoking and drinking and causing a riot. I don’t I don’t really want to do that”. And then maybe somebody else is doing something, or wearing something, and she’s just trying to figure out where does she fit in.
