이번 에피소드에서 배울 표현은… 아니에요, 여러분께서 들으면서 오늘 배울 표현이 무엇인지 한번 맞춰보세요. 우선 사람들이 자신의 취미에 대해 말할 때 사용하는 표현들을 들어볼게요. 들으면서 사람들이 현재에 대해서 말하는지 과거에 대해서 말하는지 생각해보세요.

A.I used to play football with my friends but now I don’t.
B.I used to watch a lot of films when I was a child.
C.I didn’t use to listen to music much when I was young.

네 그럼 현재의 취미활동에 대해 얘기했나요? 아니면 어렸을 때의 취미에 대해 얘기했나요? 네 맞습니다. 어렸을 때의 취미에 대한 얘기였죠.

Absolutely! Now let’s have a look at the language they used.

네! 이 모든 문장에서 사람들이 past habits 과거의 습관, 즉 과거에 규칙적으로 하거나 하지 않은 일에 대해 얘기했습니다. 이것을 얘기할 때 어떤 표현을 사용했죠? 다시 한 번 들어봐요.

I used to play football with my friends.
I used to watch a lot of films.

들으셨나요? 과거에 규칙적으로 무언가를 했다 라고 할 때에는 used to라는 표현을 사용합니다.

Yes, and did you hear what we put after ‘used to’?

다시 한번 들어봐요. 이번에는 'used to' 다음에 어떤 표현을 사용하는지 들어보세요.

I used to play football with my friends.
I used to watch a lot of films.

들으셨나요? 네 Used to다음에는 동사를 사용했습니다. Play 하다, watch보다 라는 동사이 있었는데요, 이 외에 다른 동사들도 사용할 수 있습니다. 그리고 used to는 이미 과거를 나타내기 때문에 뒤에 나오는 동사의 형태는 원형을 사용합니다.

Now, let’s quickly practise the pronunciation together! The important thing to notice here is that we pronounce ‘used to’ together, not like it’s two separate words. Repeat after me:
‘used to’

‘I used to…’

‘I used to play football.’

‘I used to watch films.’

좋아요. 자, 한 사람은 좀 다르게 말했는데요. 이 사람은 부정문을 사용해서 자신이 안 한 것을 말했습니다. 그럼 다시 한번 들어볼까요.

I didn’t use to listen to music much.

Used to전에 didn't 라고 말한 것 들으셨나요? 그리고 used to다음에는 다른 문장들과 같이 동사 원형을 사용했습니다.
