오늘은 특별한 날에 대해 말하는 법을 배워보도록 하겠습니다. James와 Phil이 특별한 날을 축하하는 것에 대해 얘기하는 대화를 들어볼게요. 알아듣지 못해도 걱정하지마세요. 저희가 잠시 후에 도와드릴게요. 먼저 무슨 날에 대해 얘기하는지 한 번 맞춰보세요.

Hi James! Happy New Year! How was your New Year's?

James
It was great, thanks! We went to a big party. It was really fun. How about you? What was your New Year's like?

Phil
It was really quiet but it was nice.

들으셨나요? 바로 ‘New Year’s’ 새해, 신정에 대해 얘기했죠.

Sam
And they asked each other some useful questions we can use to ask about lots of things. So let's have a look at those together.

Bolam
네. 그럼 신정 전날 무엇을 했는지 서로 물어보는 대화를 다시 한 번 들어볼까요? 같은 내용의 질문을 했지만 질문 구조가 조금 달랐는데요. 각 문장에서 ‘New Year's' 가 어디에 위치해있는지 잘 들어보세요.

How was your New Year's?
What was your New Year's like?

먼저 'How was your New Year's?' 이렇게 물어봤는데요. 여기서는 물어보려는 'your New Year's'의 위치가 제일 마지막에 왔죠.

Sam
And then 'What was your New Year's like?', where 'your New Year's' goes before 'like'. Can you quickly explain 'like' here?

물론이죠. 여러분 헷갈리지 마세요. 여기서 ‘like’는 좋아하다..라는 뜻이 아닙니다. ~이 어땠는지 일반적으로 물어볼 때 사용하는 표현입니다.

Exactly! And you can use these questions to ask about many things – a birthday, a party, a wedding… Shall we practise the pronunciation? Please repeat after me:

How was your birthday?
What was your birthday like?

Well done! And you can use ‘your’ or ‘the’ after ‘was’ depending on what you’re talking about! Now let's look at different ways you can answer these questions.

Yes! James와 Phil의 반응을 다시 한 번 들어봅시다. 처음 시작하는 단어 두 개가 같았는데요. 뭐였는지 들어보세요.

It was great, thanks!
It was really fun.
It was really quiet but it was nice.

들으셨나요? 모두 ‘It was…’로 시작했죠? 뒤에는 형용사가 따라왔고요. 여기서는 좋은, 재미있는, 조용한.. 등의 형용사를 썼지만 어떤 형용사든 이 자리에 올 수 있겠죠?

And we say 'it' and 'was' quite quickly, so it sounds like 'it was'. Let's practise that - repeat after me:
It was great, thanks!
It was really fun!
It was really quiet…
..but it was nice.
