오늘은 장면을 설명하는 표현을 배워보도록 하겠습니다. 창문 밖으로 바라보는 장면일 수도 있고, 여러분이 사는 곳, 혹은 방문한 곳 등을 설명할 수도 있겠죠. 자, 이제 Mark가 우리에게 사진 한 장을 설명해준다고 하네요.

Sam
Yes, he’s going to describe a photograph he took last year.

Bolam
좋아요. 여러분의 이해를 돕기위해 몇가지 단어를 미리 알려드릴게요. ‘Mountains’ 산 ‘lake’ 호수 ‘field’ 들판입..니다. 자 Mark가 이 사진을 찍은 나라는 어디일까요?

Mark
I see mountains in the background and a lake in the foreground. I see some trees at the bottomof the mountains but none at the top. On the left of the lake, I can see a field. Next to the field, I can see a house.

Bolam
와 아름다운 곳인 것 같은데요. Is it England?

Sam
Very close! Mark told me it was Scotland.

Bolam
Mark는 사진 속 것들의 위치를 설명하기 위해 여러가지 방법을 사용했는데요. 처음에 어떻게 시작했는지 다시 들어볼게요.

Mark
I see mountains in the background and a lake in the foreground.

Bolam
여기서 ‘in the background’ 배경, 뒤편이고 ‘in the foreground’ 전경이라는 뜻인데요. 이 표현은 고정된 표현이죠?

Sam
Yes, so it’s always ‘in’, not ‘on’ or ‘at’, like with some of the other phrases I used. Let’s quickly practise – repeat after me:

Bolam
다음으로는 나무에 대해 얘기했죠. 다시 한 번 들어볼까요.

Mark
I see some trees at the bottom of the mountains but none at the top.

Bolam
자, ‘at the bottom’ 밑에, ‘at the top’ 위에 ..라는 표현을 들었는데요. 이 표현은 다른 상황에서도 쓸 수 있는 표현인가요 Sam? 아니면 어떤 장면을 설명할 때만 쓰는 표현인가요?

Sam
Oh, no! For example, my bedroom is at the top of the stairs, and the kitchen is at the bottom of the stairs. Notice that I said ‘of’ before ‘stairs’.

Bolam
Great! 자 이제 Mark가 ‘on’은 어떻게 썼는지 다시 한 번 들어볼게요.

Mark
On the left of the lake, I can see a field.

Bolam
‘On the left of’ ~의 왼쪽에는..이라는 표현을 썼는데요. 이 표현은 방향을 알려줄 때도 자주 사용하는 표현이죠.

Sam
…and the opposite is, of course, ‘on the right of’. Quick practice! Repeat after me, please:

And what did Mark say at the end? Let’s listen again:

Mark
Next to the field, I can see a house.

Bolam
‘Next to’ ~의 옆에.. 라는 표현이죠.

Sam
For example, I’m sitting next to the door at the moment. Let’s say that together - ‘next to’ sounds more like one word. Repeat after me:

I’m sitting next to the door.

Bolam

Good! 자 이제 집 왼쪽에 나무가 하나 보인다..라고 말해볼게요. ‘On the left of’일까요? ‘on the right of’ 일까요?

I see a tree on the left of the house.

Great! 오늘 여러분이 배운 표현을 가지고 여러분이 폰으로 찍은 마지막 사진을 영어로 설명해보는 건 어떠세요?
