오늘은 정보를 물어볼 때 사용할 수 있는 표현을 배워보도록 하겠습니다. Adam과 세명의 다른 사람들이 하는 대화를 한 번 들어볼게요. 알아듣지 못해도 걱정하지 마세요. 잠시후에 저희가 도와드릴게요. 일단 Adam이 대화하는 사람들과 아는 사이인지 아닌지 한 번 들어보세요.

Excuse me! Where’s the nearest supermarket, please?

Woman 1
Oh, yes. Turn down here on the left, then…

Adam
Hello! Sorry to bother you. Do you know where the nearest supermarket is, please?

Man
Yes, I do. Go straight down here, then…

Adam
Hi there. Can you tell me where the nearest supermarket is, please?

Woman 2
Yes, of course I can. It’s just down here on the…

자, 여러분 어떻게 생각하세요?  Adam이 지금 대화하는 사람들과 아는 사이인 것 같나요? Sam?

Sam
No, I think he was talking to strangers, people he didn’t know. So he was being very polite.

Bolam
맞아요 아주 polite 정중했죠.

Sam
Well, he used ‘please’ a lot! And also ‘excuse me’ and ‘sorry to bother you’ in a polite voice or intonation.

Bolam
네. 정중하게 사람들의 주의를 끌기 위해 이런 표현들을 사용했죠.

Absolutely! And then he asked for the same thing, but in three different ways.

자 그럼 처음 질문을 다시 한 번 들어볼게요. 질문이 무엇으로 시작했나요?

네. ‘Where’s…’ 어디에 있나요? 라는 말로 시작했죠? Where is 를 줄인말입니다.

Thank you, Sam! 네 Adam의 질문은 정중하고 직접적이었는데요. 영어표현에서 간접적인 질문도 있어요. Adam의 말을 다시 한 번 들어볼게요. 뒷부분은 아까 살펴본 표현과 같은데요. 앞부분에 어떻게 질문을 시작했는지 잘 들어보세요.

첫번째 질문은 ‘Do you know where…?’ 어디있는지 아시나요? 이렇게 시작했습니다.

And the second question started with ‘Can you tell me where…?’

네. 'Can you tell me where…?' 어디있는지 알려주시겠어요? 이렇게 시작했죠. 질문 마지막엔 어떻게 끝냈는지 들으셨나요? Sam의 발음을 잘 들어보고 동사 is가 어디에 있는지도 잘 들어보세요.
