Eating out is better, but it's more expensive.

Sian
Yes, and there are some very simple rules to help you. So first let's look at adjectives with one syllable, like 'cheap'.

Bolam
λ„€ cheap μ €λ ΄ν•œ 이죠. 자 λͺ¨μŒμ΄ ν•˜λ‚˜μΈ ν˜•μš©μ‚¬μ˜ 비ꡐ급을 λ§Œλ“œλŠ” 법 λͺ¨λ‘ κΈ°μ–΅ν•˜μ‹œλ‚˜μš”? λ‹€μ‹œ ν•œ 번 잘 λ“€μ–΄λ³΄μ„Έμš”.

Eating in because it's cheaper!

Sian
Ok, so we add the letters 'e r' to a one-syllable adjective. So 'cheap' becomes 'cheaper'.

Bolam
자 이 λ°©λ²•μœΌλ‘œ λ‹€λ₯Έ ν˜•μš©μ‚¬λ₯Ό λΉ„κ΅κΈ‰μœΌλ‘œ λ§Œλ“œλŠ” 것도 κ°€λŠ₯ν•©λ‹ˆλ‹€. λ§ˆμ§€λ§‰μ— er만 λΆ™μ—¬μ£Όλ©΄ 되죠.

Sian
So cold becomes 'colder', and short becomes 'shorter'. Now, let's look at 2 syllable adjectives that end with the letter 'y'. Like 'healthy'.

Bolam
λ„€ healthyλŠ” κ±΄κ°•ν•œ 이죠. 비ꡐ급 μ–΄λ–»κ²Œ λ§Œλ“€μ—ˆμ£ ? λ‹€μ‹œ ν•œ 번 λ“€μ–΄λ³Όκ²Œμš”.

I prefer eating in because it's healthier.

Sian
So again we add 'er', but this time you have to check the spelling.

Bolam
μŠ€νŽ λ§μ— μ£Όμ˜ν•˜μ„Έμš”. Y λ₯Ό μ—†μ• κ³  ier을 λΆ™μ—¬μ€λ‹ˆλ‹€.

Sian
And we do this with other adjectives ending in 'y'. So pretty becomes 'prettier' – with 'i e r' at the end.

Now, can you remember what happens with other adjectives that are longer than one syllable – for example 'expensive'? Let's listen again to check.

It's more expensive.

Bolam
λͺ¨μŒμ΄ λ‘κ°œ μ΄μƒμ˜ ν˜•μš©μ‚¬μ˜ κ²½μš°λŠ” ν˜•μš©μ‚¬ μ•žμ— moreλ₯Ό λΆ™μ—¬μ£Όλ©΄ λ˜κ³ μš”.

Sian
So 'interesting' becomes 'more interesting' and 'difficult' becomes 'more difficult'. Easy, right? But careful because there are some exceptions!

Bolam
λ„€. Exception μ˜ˆμ™ΈλΌλŠ” λœ»μž…λ‹ˆλ‹€. 예λ₯Ό λ“€μ–΄ 무엇이 ‘더 μ’‹λ‹€’라고 말할 λ•Œ good뒀에 er을 λΆ™μ—¬μ„œ gooder라고 λ§ν•˜μ§€ μ•Šμ£ ? 뭐라고 ν–ˆλŠ”μ§€ κΈ°μ–΅ν•˜μ‹œλ‚˜μš”? λ‹€μ‹œ ν•œ 번 λ“€μ–΄λ³Όκ²Œμš”.

Eating out is better.

Sian
So, if we want to say that something is 'more good' we say 'it's better'. And if we want to say that something is 'more bad', we use 'it's worse'.

Let's practise those. Repeat after me:

better

worse
