오늘은 누군가의 제안이나 초대를 정중하게 거절할 때 쓸 수 있는 표현을 배워보도록 하겠습니다. 먼저, Phil이 내일 아침에 함께 커피마시자고 제안하는 말을 들어볼까요. 알아듣지 못해도 걱정하지 마세요. 잠시 후에 함께 살펴볼게요. 일단 Phil의 제안에 몇명이 좋다고 대답했는지 한 번 들어보세요.

Do you want to come for a coffee with me tomorrow morning?

I'd love to, but I'm meeting a friend then.
I'd like to, but I'm really busy.
Ah sorry, but I have to work.

알아들으셨나요? 아무도 좋다고 대답하지 않았네요. 불쌍한 Phil. 자 그럼 Sian 이제 정중하게 거절하는 표현을 함께 살펴볼까요?

No, I'm just joking! Of course!

Ha ha! Very funny Sian! 여기서 첫번째 사람이 'I'd love to' 그렇게 하고 싶어요… 라고 말했죠. 긍정적인 대답인 것 처럼 들리는데 사실 거절하기 전에 예의로 이렇게 말하는 것이 보통이에요. 다시 한 번 들어볼게요.

I'd love to, but I'm meeting a friend then.

So we often start by saying 'I'd love to, but…' or 'I'd like to, but…' and then we give a reason why we can't accept the invitation. So if you hear 'but' and a reason you know that the person is saying 'no'.

그리고 말할 때 거절하는 것을 알 수게 하는 어조도 중요하겠죠.

Exactly, so let's practise. Repeat after me and pay attention to the tone.

You can also just say 'I'm sorry, but ..'

어떤 제안을 거절할 때 보통 이유를 함께 말해주는 것이 중요하겠죠.

That's right. Can you remember any of the reasons they gave? Let's listen to the three reasons again.

I'm meeting a friend.

I'm busy then.

I have to work.

So the first person said 'I'm meeting a friend' – it's very common to use the present continuous to give your reason. For example, you can say 'I'd love to, but I'm going to the cinema'.

네. 여기서 현재 진행형으로 말했는데요. 확실한 계획일 경우 현재진행형을 쓴다고 배웠죠? 어떤 일이 일어날 것이 확실할 때 씁니다. 그리고 만약 제안을 거절하는데 이유가 없다면 'I'm busy then' 그때 바빠요 이렇게 말할 수 있겠습니다.

Yes, but that can seem rude so it's better to give a reason if you can. The last person used 'I have to', so if you have an obligation you can use this form to give your reason. Let's practise that. Repeat after me.
