Tom
Well, you know how much we millennials love our phones!

Bolam
아, 밀레니얼 들어본 것 같아요. 요즘 기술 같은 것 잘 아는 젊은 세대를 밀레니얼 이라고 부르죠?

Sam
Kind of. It’s used quite widely. Typically, in the UK, a millennial is a young adult below the age of 34.

Bolam
오, 오늘의 퀴즈와도 관련있는 내용인 것 같은데요? 모건 스탠리 연구 및 UN 자료에 따르면 인도 인구중 밀레니얼에 해당하는 사람, 그러니까 18세부터 34세 사이의 인구는 몇퍼센트일까요?

Are millennials in your country tech-savvy, like they are here in the UK?

Bolam
Definitely! Tech-savvy 기술에 능숙한 이라는 뜻입니다. 사실 요즘 젊은 사람들 뿐만 아니라 모든 사람이 새로운 기술이 나오면 능숙하게 사용하는 것 같아요.

Tom
Yeah, I actually heard that the amount of people embracing the internet in India is causing a few problems. Let’s listen to today’s news story from BBC Radio 4’s Sunday Programme. What’s the main problem that the speakers describe?

Surely ‘good morning’ should not cause the internet to crash?

Rahul
When you can have up to 200 million Indians who wake up every morning at around 8 o’clock Indian time, feel that they need to tell everybody that they know the word ‘good morning’, they want to use applications like WhatsApp and just send those messages out there! So that is what’s beginning to slow the internet down here. It’s clogging up phones and the real fear is, I think, that as we have more and more Indians that is, actually, could slow it down globally as well.

Sam
So the main problem is that too many people are using the internet on a daily basis. It’s clogging up their phones and slowing down the internet!

Bolam
맞아요! Clog up 막는다는 뜻이고 slow down 속도를 늦추다 라는 뜻입니다. 인도에 이런 새로운 기술에 익숙해지고 있는 사람들이 많아지는 것 같아요.

Sam
You could say that they’re really switched-on!

Bolam
네! Switched-on 좋은 표현인데요? 무언가 새로운 것에 열려있다 라는 뜻이죠. Switch on 스위치를 켠다는 뜻이니까 전자기기의 스위치를 켠다고 할 때도 쓸 수 있겠죠?

Tom
It must be annoying though when the whole internet is slowed down by this big influx of new users.

Bolam
Yes! Influx 유입이라는 뜻입니다. 그렇죠. 사용자의 유입이 계속 있다 바로 인터넷 사용자가 계속 늘어나고 있다는 뜻이겠죠?

Sam
So, you have a huge number of users, but the infrastructure can’t cope!

Bolam
제 생각엔 인도에 유능한 인력이 많은 것 같아요. 물론 기술적인 기반시설은 아직 개발중이지만요.

Tom
What do you mean by that? I’m not sure I understand.

Bolam
그러니까 기술을 사용하는 사람들이 정말 많다는 뜻 이자나요! 너무 많아서 기업들이 그 수요를 따라잡지 못하고 있는거죠.

Tom
And speaking of large numbers of people, it’s time to give you the answer to today’s quiz.

Bolam
That’s right! 밀레니얼에 해당되는 인구 비율은 얼마였는지가 문제였죠? 답은 바로 C 33퍼센트 였습니다.

Tom
Wow! That’s a huge number of young people who are going to be growing up with technology!

Sam
Yes, imagine how much technology will pervade India soon.

Bolam
Pervade 녹아든다, 스며든다 라는 뜻입니다. 여기서는 마냥 기술 자체가 스며든다 라기보다는 그 기술이 가져오는 새로운 기회들을 말하는 거겠죠.

Sam
Hmm… yes. Technology does seem to have a pervasive influence on all of us. It’s hard to escape from technology and modern ideas.

Tom
Hey, you got a message!

Sam
It says ‘good morning…’. Hey! Who sent that!

Tom
I don't know. Who could it be?

Sam
Oh, Tom.

Tom의 메세지 때문에 인터넷이 slow down 느려지거나 Sam의 폰이 clog up 막히지 않아야 될텐데요.
