오늘은 먼저 Sam이 직장동료인 Ben에게 전화하는 내용을 들어보겠습니다. Ben이 중요한 미팅에 늦어서 Sam이 걱정하며 어디있는지 물어보는 통화내용입니다.

Sam
Where are you, Ben?

Ben
I'm at the bus stop!

Bolam
어머.  Ben이 아직도 'bus stop' 버스 정류장이라고 하는데요.

Sam
Oh dear. While we wait, let's talk about what 'at' means here. Ben said 'I'm at the bus stop'.

Bolam
네. 'at'은 어떤 장소 근처이거나 정확히 그 장소일 경우 사용할 수 있습니다. 그러니까 Ben이 'at the bus stop'이라고 했으니 버스 정류장에 다왔거나 아주 근처라는 뜻이죠. 만약 누군가가 문을 두드린다면.. 어떻게 말할 수 있을까요?

Someone's at the door! Ben, is that you? Let me call him again!

Sam
Ben, where are you?

Ben
I'm on the bus. 

Bolam
네, 이제 'on the bus' 버스라고 대답했는데요. 'On'은 교통수단과 함께 쓸 수 있습니다.

Sam
Yes, we use 'on' for bicycles, buses, trains, planes, ships… But, careful, because we use 'in' for cars and taxis.

Bolam
'On'은 신체적으로 접촉해있거나 무언가가 받쳐주고 있을 때 사용할 수 있습니다. 예를 들어볼까요?

Sam
It's on the table.

And my feet are on the floor.

And we are on the 6th floor…and Ben is not… Let me call him again.

Sam
Ben, you're so late. Where are you?

Ben
I'm in the office. But where is everyone? And where are you?

Sam
Oh, Ben! Which building did you go to?

Bolam
어머~어떡하죠? Ben이 다른 건물로 갔나봐요. 'In the office' 사무실 안이라고 했는데요. 여기서 'in'은 벽처럼 어떤 것에 둘러쌓여있는 상태를 나타냅니다.

Sam
Exactly! We are 'in the studio', 'in a building', Ben is 'in the wrong office', and my coffee is 'in my cup'. 'At', 'on' and 'in' can be confusing words because we use them to talk about time, as well…

Bolam
네. 그런데 오늘은 위치를 설명하는 경우만 살펴볼거에요. 그러니까 동사는 '있다'는 뜻의 'be'동사를 쓰겠죠?

Sam
Now, the pronunciation isn't difficult, but it's still useful to practise. We usually put more importance on the words after 'at', 'on' and 'in'. Like this – repeat after me:

I'm at the bus stop.

Bolam
Thanks, Sam. 이제 오늘 배운 것 복습해볼게요. 자 이제 여러분이 'the lift' 승강기에 타고 있다고 해볼게요. 뭐라고 말할까요? 'I'm'으로 시작해야겠죠? 'The lift' 앞에 무슨 전치사를 써야할까요? 잠시 후 Sam의 대답과도 비교해보세요.

Did you say the same as Sam? 자 이제 기차를 타고 있다고 말해볼까요. 'The train'앞에는 무슨 전치사를 쓸까요. 잠시 후 Sam의 대답과 비교해보세요.

Did you say the same? Well done! 자 여러분이 회사 리셉션 안내원의 전화를 한 통 받았는데요. 여러분 친구가 점심을 함께하려고 막 도착했다고 하네요. 이 안내원이 뭐라고 할까요? 'Your friend'로 문장을 시작해야겠죠? 리셉션은 영어로 'reception'입니다.

'Reception'앞에는 보통 'the'를 쓰지 않는다는 것 주의하세요. 자 이제 여러분 위치를 설명할 때 'at', 'on', 'in'을 사용해서 설명할 수 있겠죠?
