오늘은 직장에서 허락되고 허락되지 않은 일에 대한 이야기를 들어볼거에요. 내용을 다 이해하지 못하더라도. 걱정하지 마세요. 저희가 도와드릴 거에요. 자, 그럼 직장에서 허락되지 않은 일에 대해서만 이야기하는 사람은 누구인지 한번 들어볼까요?

We can wear jeans but we can't wear shorts.

We're allowed to finish early on a Friday.

We're not allowed to smoke inside.

들으셨나요? 바로 세 번째 사람이 허락되지 않은 일에 대해서만 이야기했습니다. 실내흡연이었죠. 허락된 일에 대해서는 어떻게 얘기하는지 한번 알아볼까요, Sian?

Yes, so the first person used the verb 'can'. But can you remember what followed 'can'? Was it 'to' plus the verb or was it just the verb? Let's listen again to find out.

자, 조동사 ‘can’의 뒤에 ‘to’가 없이 동사의 기본형이 옵니다. 허락되지 않은 일에 대해 이야기할 때는 ‘cannot’의 축약형인 ‘can’t’를 사용하여 부정문을 만듭니다.

Yes, and 'can' is a modal verb so it doesn't change its form. So we say, 'I can', 'you can', 'we can'. Let's quickly look at the pronunciation. So the positive form 'can' is not normally stressed in a sentence so it becomes 'can'. Repeat after me:

그러니까 ‘can’은 강세가 없지만 ‘can’t’는 보통 강세가 있는 거죠?

That's right. And it’s pronounced 'can't. Let's practise the pronunciation.

자, 허락된 일에 대해 이야기할 때 사용하는 또 다른 동사구가 있었죠? 무엇이었는지 기억나시나요? 다시 한번 들어볼게요.

허락된 일에 대해 이야기할 때 ‘can’과 같은 의미를 가진 ‘be allowed to’라는 동사구도 사용할 수가 있습니다. ‘Be allowed to’ 뒤에도 동사의 원형을 씁니다.

But 'be allowed to' unlike 'can' does change its form – we need to change the form of the 'be' verb. So we say 'I'm allowed to', 'he's allowed to', 'they're allowed to'. Let's practise the pronunciation. Repeat after me.

Yes, so to make it negative we use the negative form of the verb 'be'. Let's quickly practise. Repeat after me.
