오늘은 식당에서 음식을 주문할 때 쓰는 표현을 배워보도록 하겠습니다. 먼저 식당에서의 대화를 한 번 들어볼까요. 이해하지 못해도 걱정하지마세요. 잠시후 저희가 이해할 수 있도록 도와드리겠습니다. 일단 대화에서 몇가지 코스를 주문하는지 한 번 맞춰볼까요? 이해를 돕기위해 몇가지 단어를 알려드릴게요. Soup 수프, fish 생선, vegetables 야채, chocolate cake초코케잌, water 물입니다.

Waiter:
Are you ready to order?

Diner:
Yes! To start, I'll have the soup, please. For main, I'll have the fish with vegetables. And for dessert, I'll have the chocolate cake, please.

Waiter:
Of course. Anything to drink?

Diner:
To drink,I'll have water, please.

들으셨나요? 세 코스를 시킨 것 같네요. 그럼 Sam, 식당에서 쓸 수 있는 표현을 살펴볼까요?

Absolutely!

웨이터가 제일 처음 할 질문은 'Are you ready to order?' 였습니다.

Sam
There are only two ways to answer this question: 'yes' or 'no'! In our conversation, the answer was 'yes'.

네 다시 한 번 들어보고 3개의 코스를 어떻게 주문하는지 잘 들어볼께요. 셋 중에 하나는 다른 표현을 썼으니까 잘 들어보세요.

Yes! To start, I'll have the soup, please. For main, I'll have the fish with vegetables. And for dessert, I'll have the chocolate cake, please.

표현이 어떻게 다른지 눈치채셨나요? 스타터를 말할 때 to start, 메인 코스를 말할 때는 for main, 디저트를 말할 때는 for dessert라고 했죠.

'To start' 에서 start는 동사고, main 과 디저트는 명사잖아요. 그래서 start 앞에는 to를 썼고 main과 dessert 앞에는 for를 썼습니다.

And then you say what you want – do you remember how?

네 'I'll have' 저는 무엇을 먹겠습니다. 이렇게 말했죠? I'll뒤에 동사로 have가 왔습니다.

Sam
Yes, decisions in a restaurant are usually quite quick. And after 'I'll have…', you say the food or drink you want.

Bolam
그리고 음식을 주문할 때 음식 앞에 the 를 붙여줍니다. 메뉴에 있는 특정 음식을 가르키고 있기 때문이죠. Sam이 하는 말을 듣고 연습해보세요.

Repeat after me:

To start, I'll have the soup, please.

For main, I'll have the fish with vegetables.

And for dessert, I'll have the chocolate cake, please.

다음으로 직원이 아마 음료는 어떻게 하실건지 물어볼거에요. 'Anything to drink?' 이렇게요.

Yes – this is short for 'would you like anything to drink?' – and how do you answer it, do you remember? Let's listen again:

To drink, I'll have water, please.

네 여기서도 to start처럼 to drink 음료는요 라고 하고 I'll를 사용해서 음료를 주문합니다.
