오늘은 길을 알려줄 때 쓸 수 있는 표현을 배워보도록 하겠습니다. Simon이 모르는 사람에게 버스 정류장에 어떻게 가는지 물어보는 대화를 들어볼까요? 다 알아듣지 못해도 걱정하지 마세요. 잠시 후에 도와드릴게요. 일단 한 번 들어보고 세명의 사람이 모두 같은 곳을 알려주는지 맞춰보세요.

Excuse me! Where’s the bus station, please?

1. Go straight on, take the first road on the left, and it’ll be on your right.
2. Go straight down here, take the first road on your left, and it’s on the right.
3. Just go straight, turn left at the supermarket. It’ll be on the right.

잘 들으셨나요? 세명의 사람이 모두 다른 표현을 사용해서 같은 곳을 가르쳐주고있네요.

So let’s look at those different phrases they used.

이제 다시 한 번 들어보고 어떻게 시작했는지 잘 들어보세요. 비슷하게 시작하나요?

Go straight on…

Go straight down here…

세명 모두 go straight 직진하세요.. 이렇게 말하고 있죠. 그 중 한명은 ‘go straight on’, 그리고 또다른 한 명은 ‘go straight down here’ 이렇게 말했네요.

You can even say ‘go straight up here’! Let’s practise the pronunciation. Repeat after me:

Go straight on.

Go straight down here.

다음으로 take의 사용을 살펴볼게요. Take 뒤에 어떤 표현이 왔는지 다시 한 번 들어보세요.

…take the first road on the left…

…take the first road on your left…

네. ‘take’ 뒤에 the first road 첫번째 길 또는 the second road 두번째 길 등과 같은 표현이 올 수 있습니다. 그리고 on the left 왼쪽에 또는 on the right 오른쪽에 와 같은 표현도 따라올 수 있죠.

And here, you can use ‘on the’ or ‘on your’ before ‘right’ and ‘left’. Shall we practise? Repeat after me:

Take the first road on the right.

다음으로 turn 돌다.. 라는 말을 쓴 표현도 살펴볼까요? 이 동사 뒤에 어떤 표현이 왔나요?

…turn left at the supermarket.

Yes! 그리고 전치사 at을 붙여서 어떤 특정 장소를 설명해줄 수 있겠죠?

자 이제 세명의 사람들이 마지막으로 뭐라고 설명했는지 들어볼게요.

They used ‘on the’ or ‘on your’ before ‘right’ and ‘left’ again. And before that?

앞에는 같은 의미로 ‘it will be’의 축약형인 ‘it’ll be’ 를 사용하거나 ‘it’s’를 사용했죠.

And repeat after me:

It’s on the left.

It’ll be on the right.
