오늘은 제안하거나 초대하는 법에 대해 얘기해보겠습니다. 일단 4명의 사람이 친구에게 제안하는 말을 들어보고 질문에 대답해볼게요. 이 중 누가 친구를 자신의 집에 초대했는지 한번 들어보세요?

Are you free tonight?

Do you want to go to the cinema on Friday?

Would you like to come for dinner this weekend?

Why don't you come to the beach with us?

네. 세 번째 사람이 자신의 집에 저녁 먹으러 오라고 초대했네요. 그럼 어떻게 초대하는지 다같이 살펴볼까요? 우선 상대방 시간이 가능한지 알아봐야겠죠?

Sian
Yes! So you can ask the question 'Are you free? and then give the day or time.  So you can say 'Are you free this weekend?' Or 'Are you free tonight?'

Bolam
그렇죠. 상대방이 시간이 가능한 것 같은데요. 그러면 이제 무언가를 하자고 제안해볼까요?

Sian
Yes, one way to invite people is to use the verb 'want' – 'Do you want to…' But what happens to the pronunciation? Let's listen again.

Do you want to go to the cinema on Friday?

들어보니까 want 와 to가 합쳐져서 wanna 이렇게 발음 되는군요?

Sian
Yes. Let's practise. Repeat after me:

wanna

‘Do you wanna go to the cinema?'

Bolam
좋습니다. 그럼 want to 다음에는 그냥 동사를 적어주면 되네요. 여기서 go를 써준 것 처럼요. 물론 다른 동사를 써도 됩니다. 무언가를 같이 하자고 제안하고 초대할 때 가장 많이 쓰는 동사중 하나는 have 인데요. Do you wanna have…? 또는 'come' 을 사용해서 do you wanna come…? 이렇게 말할 수도 있겠죠?

So next we heard 'would you like to…'. This is slightly more formal than 'do you wanna' but it’s another useful way to make an invitation.

맞습니다. Do you want to 와 같은 구조로 뒤에 바로 동사원형을 써주면 됩니다.

Sian
Let's practise. Repeat after me:

Would you like to…

Would you like to come for dinner?

좋습니다. 제안할 때 쓸 수 있는 표현이 또 있죠?

Sian
That's right – We can also use 'why don't you…?' 

Bolam
'Why don't you...?'  ~ 하는 게 어때? 이 표현은 문장 안에 부정어가 쓰였지만 긍정적 표현으로 무언가를 제안하거나 초대할 때 사용할 수 있어요. 격식 없는 표현이죠.

And after 'why don't you..?' we just add the verb.

Why don’t you는 조언을 할 때도 쓸 수 있는 표현이에요. 그러니까 무언가 같이 하자고 제안할 때는 come을 써야지 go를 쓰면 안되겠죠? Go를 쓰면 ‘너는 가는 게 어때?’하고 조언하는 것처럼 들릴 수 있으니까요. 그리고 함께 하자는 뜻으로 with us 또는 with me 이렇게 덧붙여 줄 수도 있습니다.

Why don't you come to the beach with us?

자 이제 초대하고 제안하는 표현들을 모두 배워보았는데요. 한 번 연습해볼까요? 먼저 여러분의 친구가 내일 시간이 가능한지 알아봅시다. 뭐라고 물어볼까요?

여러분 친구가 시간이 난다고 하네요. 그럼 공원에 같이 가자고 제안해볼까요? 동사 want 를 사용해보세요. 발음 신경쓰시고요.

Do you want to go to the park?

Bolam
잘하셨습니다. 친구가 공원에는 안 가고 싶다고 하네요. 그러면 여러분 집에 점심먹으러 오라고 초대해보세요. Why로 시작해볼까요?
